Dr. Gaetano Cavalieri, President of CIBJO and a true friend of ours.
CIBJO, The World Jewelry Confederation represents the interests of all individuals, organisations and companies earning their livelihoods from jewellery, gemstones and precious metals, covering the entire industry from mine to marketplace in the various production, manufacturing, trading and retail centres.
Dr. Gaetano Cavalieri has served as President of CIBJO since 2001. In July 2006, at his initiative, CIBJO was granted “Special Consultative Status” with the United Nations, Department of Economic and Social Affairs (ECOSOC). Together with the UN, Dr. Cavalieri also established the World Jewelry Confederation Education Foundation (WJCEF), which is responsible for creating social responsibility awareness in the international luxury industries. CIBJO is also involved in the work of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) to promote policies that will improve economic and social well-being for people worldwide.
Dr. Cavalieri, what is the most important development in the world of jewelry today?
“From CIBJO’s point of view responsible sourcing and manufacturing is paramount. The world of jewelry needs to have full transparency in the chain of distribution. The world has changed and is changing and as an industry we have to commit to sustainable business. Offer the consumer the best possible behavior. People nowadays are highly knowledgeable and can find out where certain stones come from or how the product is made. Luckily the jewelry industry and brands especially are already highly committed to their reputation and the products they produce. So they are committed to explain where their products come from and how they are made. We’re talking about elementary principles. Jewelry brands are based on credibility, trust and transparency. Within 2 or 3 years the whole industry I think will be fully transparent and sustainable. You can compare it to a whole range of products we find on the shelves of the supermarket. People nowadays demand organic and natural products that are produced in a fair-trade model. This is normal now. It will be normal in the jewelry industry soon too.” “The truth is the truth, from every standpoint”
How does Tirisi Jewelry fit into this picture?
“Tirisi Jewelry is a crystal clear company. Natascha and Julian, have full focus on the overall quality of the product and the material source. As well treating the manufacturing staff correctly and within the law. And it’s also a company with relatively young people; a new and different generation that live by modern-day rules. For them being sustainable and transparent is normal, you could say, second nature. They grew up in the era of the internet where you can find and trace back everything you want, including fine jewelry. At Tirisi Jewelry they are well aware that the truth is the truth, from every standpoint.”
